Are you ready for the Australian citizenship test? A self-assessment
Feeling ready and being ready aren't always the same thing. Before your appointment arrives, it's worth doing an honest check. This self-assessment will tell you where you actually stand.
Use this alongside the official Department of Home Affairs citizenship test page and Our Common Bond booklet.
How to score yourself
Work through the checklist below. For each item, award:
- 2 points — yes, confidently
- 1 point — mostly, but not sure
- 0 points — no, or haven't done this yet
At the end, add up your score and check the result.
Part 1: study preparation
| # | Question | Your score |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Have you read Our Common Bond in full, including all four testable sections? | /2 |
| 2 | Have you taken notes in your own words — not just highlighted the booklet? | /2 |
| 3 | Can you explain what each Australian value means without looking it up? | /2 |
| 4 | Do you understand the difference between federal, state, and local government responsibilities? | /2 |
| 5 | Do you know the key dates and events in Australian history covered in the booklet? | /2 |
Part 1 subtotal: /10
Part 2: practice test performance
| # | Question | Your score |
|---|---|---|
| 6 | Have you completed at least three full practice tests under timed conditions (45 minutes, no notes)? | /2 |
| 7 | Are you consistently scoring 15 or more correct answers across multiple practice tests? | /2 |
| 8 | Are you getting all five Australian values questions right in every practice test? | /2 |
| 9 | When you get a question wrong, do you go back to Our Common Bond to understand why the right answer is right? | /2 |
| 10 | Have you varied the practice tests you use (not just the same questions on repeat)? | /2 |
Part 2 subtotal: /10
Part 3: test day readiness
| # | Question | Your score |
|---|---|---|
| 11 | Do you know exactly where your test centre is and how long it takes to get there? | /2 |
| 12 | Do you have your appointment letter ready? | /2 |
| 13 | Do you have original photo ID (passport or driver's licence)? | /2 |
| 14 | Are you planning to arrive 15–20 minutes early? | /2 |
| 15 | Do you know the pass requirements: at least 15 correct answers and all five values questions right? | /2 |
Part 3 subtotal: /10
Your result
Total: /30
| Score | What it means |
|---|---|
| 25–30 | Ready. You've done the preparation. Walk in with confidence. |
| 17–24 | Nearly ready. Close, but worth another week of focused study — particularly on any area where you scored 0 or 1. |
| 0–16 | Not yet ready. More preparation needed before your appointment. Focus first on reading Our Common Bond and doing timed practice tests. |
The one area that matters most
If you scored less than 6 out of 10 on Part 2, that's the area to focus on — particularly the values questions. All five must be answered correctly to pass, regardless of your overall score. Consistently missing even one values question in practice means you're not yet ready.
See Australian citizenship test values questions explained for a full breakdown of how these questions work.

Start practising now
The only way to know how you'll perform under real conditions is to practise under real conditions.
- Practice Test 1 — start here
- Random practice test — mix up the questions
Most people who prepare consistently pass on their first attempt. The test is fair and manageable — preparation is the difference.
